How Check works and how to get the best results. Prefer to watch? See the video guides.

How to check your maths

  1. Take a photo of your hand-written working, or choose one from your gallery.
  2. Tap Scan maths. Check reads your working and shows it back to you.
  3. Look it over in the Text, Maths, or LaTeX tab — and fix anything we misread (see below).
  4. Tap Check my maths. You'll get a verdict, and if something's wrong, the step where it went wrong plus a hint.

Getting a good photo

  • Good, even lighting — avoid shadows across the page.
  • Hold the camera square to the page, not at an angle.
  • Fill the frame with the working you want checked.
  • Dark pen or pencil on plain paper reads best.
  • Sideways photos are fine — Check copes with rotation. You can also use the Rotate button to view it the right way up.

The Text, Maths and LaTeX tabs

After scanning, your working is shown three ways:

  • Text — a plain-text version you can read and edit easily.
  • Maths — your working typeset to look like real maths.
  • LaTeX — the precise notation, for fine edits.

If we've misread something, just edit it in the Text or LaTeX tab before checking — the other tabs update as you type.

Free checks & credits

Everyone gets 5 free checks a day (the count resets at midnight). Need more? Credit packs top up your balance and never expire. Schools and universities can arrange institutional access for a higher daily quota.

Exam mode

Tick Exam mode before checking and Check will also comment on how clearly your working is presented for a marker, with a 1–5 legibility score. Leave it off for everyday checking.

Is the result always right?

Check is an AI assistant and is usually accurate, but not infallible — results can occasionally vary. If something looks wrong, try checking again, edit anything we misread, or ask your teacher. Treat it as a helpful second pair of eyes, not the final word.

Your data

We never store your photo, and saving your working to help improve Check is entirely optional. See Your data & privacy for the full detail.
